No actual war; no shooting; no killing; NOT A WAR. The term cold war was a simple and easy term to use. The cold war was actually "the years of stalemate" between the communist world and the free world...but as you can see it doesn't have a "ring" to it...Cold War is easier to say, easier to remember, and sounds alot better.

The Cold War was a war of ideologies, as are most wars, but there was no combat involved.

The Cold War was between the USA and her allies and the USSR and her allies. Began in 1945 when neither superpower needed the other to defeat Nazi Germany and Facism.

From the mid 1940's-1990 America and Russia were at war yet no arms were actually used. This led to agresion such as the Cuban missile crises but they were nothing but threats. It's called the Cold War because ni shots were fired

When WWII ended George Orwell used the term 'Cold War' in his essay "You and the Atomic Bomb" (published in Oct 1945). The essay was about living in a world with the threat of nuclear warfare. He eluded to 'a peace that is no peace' which he labeled a permanent 'COLD WAR'. He referred to a battle of ideologies between communism (Russia) and the Western powers of capitalism.

The first to include the USA in the 'cold war' was Bernard Baruch who was a Presidential adviser, he delivered a speech in South Carolina in April of '47 saying "Let us not be deceived, we are today in the midst of a cold war". But Walter Lippmann gave the term the largest exposure with his book "Cold War" in '47

So while there was never a 'true' war the tensions and back door battles between communism and capitalism were continuous. The Marxist socialist ideologies invariably attempted to impose their will, including by force, upon often unwilling populations. They resorted to force in many cases to accomplish this.
