The Black Death was spread by rats and the fleas they carried.
There is a story that the religious fervor of the times, and especially a desire to suppress witchcraft, prompted medieval people to kill off cats, which allowed the rat population to increase out of control, making the plague worse than it otherwise would have been. Though it makes a good story, there is no historic evidence of it I have seen, and the history of witch hunts makes it seem unlikely, because the first witch hunts were more than a hundred years after the Black Death.
The Black Plague was spread by fleas, which were on the cats, so when they were exterminated one of the primary sources of the travel of the Black Plague was eliminated but fleas were also on rats.

The Black Death killed millions. It affected the Catholic Church because good priests that tried to help the dying, caught the disease themselves and died. Sometimes people not qualified to be priests, were made priests anyway because of the lack of qualified candidates. People began to question the priesthood. Foreigners, especially Jewish ones were considered to be a cause of the plague. Many Jewish communities were wiped out.

More properly, a LACK of science played a role. The means by which the Bubonic Plague was spread was unknown (disease spread by fleas from rats). It was blamed on night fogs, cats, and bad air. When the cats were killed, there were more rats to spread the disease.
Absence of light from the sun and because of this lack of life and death
The black death happened across Europe but mostly in Britain due to lack of hygiene. The outbreak was from the early 1540s until the late 1550s.
