There are over 58,000 names on the Vietnam wall commemorating those who died due to the war. The list is growing as the effects of chemicals such as Agent Orange have added casualties that are directly caused by the war.

GI's in the field, when engaged with enemy units, used the term "Contact!" over the radio. Often times ambushes were screamed over the radio as "Ambush!" or "Contact"...and/or the term "Ambush" (over the radio) would transform from "Ambush to Contact" as the messege relayed from operator to operator. The words Contacts and Ambushes were interchangable. Actually getting ambushed happened to anyone entering the field (leaving town)...wheeled vehicle convoys, military police convoys, supply trucks running errands. Units engaged in battle, such as the 173rd Airborne Brigade at Dak To in 1967, lost 376 men killed...some of those GI's were killed in ambushes as they either left the hill or tried to reinforce it. The Battle of the Ia Drang (1965), PARTIALLY depicted in the Hollywood film (movie) "We Were Soldiers...", starring actor Mel Gibson, only shows LTC Moore's battalion (1/7 Cav) fighting NVA regulars. The real casualties came from the (2/7 Cav); when they were "ambushed" walking in single file to Landing Zone (LZ Albany)...150 men shot dead. The movie showed less than 100 US Cavalrymen killed at Ia Drang; when in reality there were over 300 dead GI's, more than half from the 2/7 Cav from the 3 day fight. The Battle of Ia Drang had "AMBUSH" casualties. Of the approximate 58,000 plus men killed in Vietnam; approximately 18,518 were killed by bullets and 8,456 men were killed by shrapnel. Those were the primary projectiles used during ambushes. Command detonated land mines (mines blown by manually operating a wire) were often used to "start the ambush", and added casualties from those initial explosions were added to those figures.
