In Greek mythology, there were three kinds of water nymphs: Naiads, Nereids, and Oceanids. The Naiads were the nymphs of freshwater bodies: lakes, pools, and especially rivers. A naiad lured Hylas, the youthful companion of Heracles (Hercules) to his death. The Nereids were the daughters of Nereus, the "Old Man of the Sea," and were the nymphs of the Mediterranean Sea. Two prominate ones were Thetis, mother of Achilles and wife of Peleus, and Amphitrite, wife of Poseidon, god of the Sea. The Oceanids were the nypmhs of the river Ocean; the saltwater river encircling the earth.
