It can be argued that the primary negative aspect of the Exchange was disease propagation. Smallpox and other old world diseases west, and (it has been argued but not proven) syphilis and other venereal diseases east.

Benefits largely stemmed from the transfer of goods back to Europe. In particular, potatoes from the New World became a dietary staple in Europe because of their abundance of carbohydrates and vitamins A and C. (Population increased with the help of potatoes, since less land could yield a more nutritious and filling product.) Chocolate, corn, tomatoes, and tobacco also went to Europe.

Horses, cattle, and wheat were brought from Europe to the New World.

Negative consequences included the taking of American gold and silver back to Europe. Initially setting off a price revolution for the Spanish economy, Spain later failed to reinvest the gold and silver, which created repercussions. Of course, European diseases such as smallpox were rampant in the Americas.
