1917Congress passed the Selective Service Act on May 18, 1917. The act, of course, required all able males between 18-25 to register for the military draft. This included citizens, along with non-citizen resident aliens.

The Selective Service Act of 1940 required that all male citizens between the ages of 21 and 35 must register with their local draft boards. During World War II the age requirement was changed to males between the ages of 18 and 45. The Selective Service Act of 1940 is also known as the Burke-Wadsworth Act.

The Selective Service Act or the Selective Draft Act was passed in 1917. President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law because America's army was small compared to the European nations armies.
