Giovanni da Verrazzano [c. 1485-c. 1528] was an Italian explorer, in service to France. He was the first European known to have explored the North Atlantic coast, from South Carolina to Newfoundland. Among his discoveries were the New York Harbor, and Narragansett Bay, in 1524. Unfortunately, his explorations were carried out at a time when other explorations received greater recognition, because of their immediate paybacks in trade and treasure: the Conquest of Mexico, and the Circumnavigation of the World. For example, it has been only within the last half-century that Henry Hudson [1570-1611] has been nudged aside, as supposed discoverer of New York City, in 1609. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge - allbeit misspelled - that linked Brooklyn and Staten Island, in 1964, is named in Verrazzano's honor.
The Vikings were in North America 500 years before Columbus sailed but did nothing, didn't stay long, and never really knew they had been on a new continent. Christopher Columbus "discovered" (tripped over) America as he was looking for a direct route to the East Indies. He then made two more voyages of discovery and established the first permanent European Colony in the Western Hemisphere on the Island of Hispaniola.
