I do not believe he "lives or dies" by conservative values because the ideas of conservatism vary greatly from country to country. A US conservative would never get elected in the UK because would be seen as a right wing extremist; on the flip side the US would not elect a UK conservative because they are not conservative enough. Bottom line: He is a conservative because it is more profitable.
