The Greeks evolved from monarchy through oligarchy and tyranny to democracy. Their democracy had mixed success and disruption as it was exploited by smart orators. But it was direct democracy - citizens voting in regular assemblies, feasible because of the smallness of the city-states where people could walk to meetings.
With large countries today, citizen attendance is impracticable, so we have representative democracy where elected members meet in a parliament and do not necessarily represent the views of the people who elected them. Some people consider that parliamentary democracy today is approaching crisis where the electors are losing confidence in their parliamentarians.
Ancient Greek government varied from place to place and time to time. Employed by the Greeks, and when it first evolved, many Greeks thought it a bad idea.
