For a while, they couldn't! Although the pay for a private was only $6, the Congress almost never was able to pay the soldiers. In fact, only the soldiers' respect for their Commander, George Washington, kept many from deserting. In In the year 1783, after the war was over, the soldiers still had not been paid their salaries, and the Congress was chased out of Philadelphia by its own army!

That was a big problem. They didn't have the money so they gave land. One of the things that happened with this was that Hamilton who was secretary of the Treasury went to these men and bought the land deeds for pennies on the dollar. He literally stole the land from them. Some of the former soldiers never did get paid.

Why were soldiers from the Revolutionary War mad at the US Congress?

Mostly because they had not been paid, in some cases for years. During their service they had starved because their government provided them with little or no food. They had gone practically naked for lack of clothing. They had gotten by without proper equipment and supplies of all kinds. With the war ending, some men had served for years, and had nothing with which to try to pick up the threads of their civilian life.

Some people think that Benedict Arnold is important because he was a traitor in the American Revolutionary War. He was first a great general for the American soldiers but then things all of sudden changed and he went over to be a British Soldier because he thought that the American soldiers would lose against the British. But turns out that he was wrong about that because the American soldiers won the American Revolutionary War between American soldiers and British soldiers. ~Thank You~
