New York City was the first capital of the United States of America under the Constitution adopted in 1787. The first capitol of the United States, however, was Philadelphia, where the Continental Congress sat when independence was declared in 1776.
Chicago received the nickname "Second City" in the late nineteenth century after being rebuilt from the great Chicago fire of 1873.
Vicksburg NEW RESPONDENT. The last major port city of the Confederacy to fall in Union hands, on Feb. 22,1865. was that of Wilmington, North Carolina. Galveston, Texas - fell in May 1865 in Union hands, but it wasn't a major port city.
