In fact the Constitution states that a person must me a natural born citizen to be president of the US and must have lived in the US at least 14 years. And be 35 years of age.
This is an interesting question, mainly due to the way its worded. To answer how many years must a PRESIDENT be a resident of the U.S., the actual answer would be ZERO!
Since they ARE ALREADY PRESIDENT, according to the question, it would not matter how long they REMAIN in the U.S. This is the case with William Henry Harrison who was a resident of the U.S. for 32 days before he died. Since he was a resident of the U.S. when he was president, he didn't need to qualify under any other provision.
Words are very dangerous. The question also does not state what the resident is President of. My cousin was elected president of our tree-house club when I was four years old, but he had literally arrived in the country the day before.
Finally, George Washington qualified for the Presidency by being a Natural born citizen resident of Virginia, even though Virginia was only a year old when he was elected (under the Constitution). He was born there in 1732 and the united States included all of the sovereign states united.

∙ 15y agoThey must have been born a U.S. Citizen (but you can be a citizen and be born in Another Country). You must be a resident for at least 14 years (but a citizen for your entire life).

∙ 10y agoArticle II, Section 1, clause 5 of the United States Constitution sets out the qualifications for the office of President of the United States:
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. So, you must be a resident for 14 years, and you must also be a citizen from birth.
