There is a First Amendment right that there is freedom of religion and that Congress will make no law to interfere with the practice of it.
However, the popular phrase "separation of Church and State" itself is not in the Constitution, but comes from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Association. They were afraid that since he was President, he would try to make his own denomination/beliefs the "official" religion of the U.S. Thomas Jefferson was writing back to them to say that they didn't have anything to worry about, any Christian denomination could worship as they wish, and that there should be "a wall of separation between church and state." I mention "Christian denomination" because in the 1800s, that's all the amendment provided protection for- Supreme Court cases in the 1800s denounce Islam as a "spurious religion."
Unfortunately, those who wish to remove religion from the public square have cited this very term, a complete 180 degree redefinition of what it originally meant.
Since Congress can't make laws banning religion, they just get the courts to do it.
The idea that the government should not interfere with religion is called the separation of church and state.
This is a concept known as "separation of church and state."
This was a big issue in the civil war and today it still is.

Laissez faire

magna carta
The "comfort" of a life after death as well as the "comfort" of someone watching over them and keeping them safe has attracted many people to the idea of religion.
A thousand years ago government was ruled by religion. Kings were threatened and told what to do by the church. The people were told what to think and do by the church. In the 1700's enlightenment thinkers like John Locke proposed that religion had no rights in government and the people could choose their own government. This was a revolutionary idea and changed the way government was seen. Kings were not chosen by God and the church didn't belong in government. Government needed to be secular and there needed to be a separation between church and state. People have the right to worship (or not) freely and not have to support or remain members of a state religion.
Governments and Religions should be independent of each other. The only ruling party that has no association is that of the Communist Party. Though it will dictate what religion a country will have.
Everywhere, you cannot base government off of a religious context, when not everyone believes in the tenets of that religion. It's unfair to those who are not of the same faith as the government, and religion is often prone to misinterpretation and extremism in rare cases.
