The liquor industry feared that women would vote for prohibition. Business owners feared that women would vote for regulations that would drive up business costs.
Even some churches and clergy members spoke out against women suffrage. They argued that marriage was a sacred bond in which the entire family was represented by the man. In that case, they believed that women did not need the vote.
The groups that did not benefit from increased suffrage in the United States was all white males could vote and hold office. But still women couldn't vote nor can African Americans, males or females could vote. In some states even free African Americans couldn't vote.
In the United States, a number of people throughout history were denied the right to vote. In some cases, the denial was temporary: in the early days of the country, several states (including Maryland) tried to pass laws that said only Christians could vote. This meant that Jews could not, since the law said only those who swore allegiance to Jesus could cast a ballot. But this was also a problem for Quakers, who although they were Christians, were unwilling to swear an oath, which goes against their religion. These laws were eventually overturned, and in the case of Quakers, they were ultimately allowed to "affirm" rather than swear an oath.
Other people who could not vote were blacks-- black men got the right to vote first, when the 15th amendment was ratified in 1870, but it was often a symbolic victory-- many southern states still refused to allow black people to vote well into the 1960s. And black women, along with white women, finally got the vote in 1920.
In the United States, many groups were denied the right to vote. These included Native Americans, African Americans, women, and several other immigrant groups.
Non-citizens such as slaves and women were disenfanchised by the American Constitution.
