Native Americans lost the lands they lived and hunted on most of the time and were moved to small portions of land where their reservations were established. They lost the opportunity to hunt and follow their traditions. The lands that were set aside for them often had poor soil and yet growing their food was expected of them. The European settlers expected the Native cultures to assimilate into the European society and live lifestyles that were foreign to them. As time went on the lands that were promised to the nations were divided among those in the tribes. Then there was land allotted to homesteaders which reduced their lands even further. During years such as 1886-7 - in Montana the winter was so bad many cattle died and a drought had limited crops so more land was sold so food could be bought. because they mum was taken
