Molly Pitcher's real name is actually Mary Ludwig. She was married in the year of 1769 and happily lived with John Casper Hays. When he signed up for the continental army, Molly packed up and followed him. She helped the weary soldiers by carrying a pitcher to the injured and thirsty soldiers. In 1789, John Casper Hays, Molly's husband collapsed during the battle because of the heat and died trying to man his cannon. Later remarried to George McCauley and THEN her name was changed to Mary Hays McCauley.
