The word "commonwealth" originally meant something for the good or well being of all the people "in common". The word "republic" comes from Latin by way of French meaning, basically, in the public concern or best interest.
As the name origins would imply, the two concepts are very similar. However, while most commonwealths are democratic republics, a commonwealth could have any form of government in the interest of that "common good", and examples from history and the modern world include republics, federations and confederations, and constitutional monarchies.
A republic, on the other hand, is a form of government where governing is done by a group of representatives of the people, whether wholly elected by the general public or not.
A Parliamentary Democracy is where the parliament picks the Prime Minister, and a Republic is where the elected representatives vote for a President.
what is the difference between a republic and a parliament
Hungary is a parliamentary democracy and Czech republic is a democracy.
Pakistan- Federal Parliamentary Republic Iceland- Unitary Parliamentary Republic
They both have different rights to be elected and have the right to vote.
They are not comparable. The Roman Republic was an oligarchy, not a democracy.
a presidential democracy is ruled by a president and a parlimentary democracy is ruled by a prime minister
They both have different rights to be elected and have the right to vote.
There can be little difference between a parliamentary republic and a constitutional monarchy, except the President in a parliamentary republic (such as Germany or Ireland) has made a positive decision to become Head of State.
The primary difference is that a Democracy is run by the majority, while a Republic is run by the law. A Republic prevents the majority from abusing the minority.
Iceland is a unitary parliamentary republic, while Australia is a constitutional monarchy.
The widely used definition of Presidential Democracy is "A system of government where the executive branch exists separately from a legislature" whereas, Parliamentary Democracy is defined as "A party with greatest representation in the parliament and its leader becoming the prime minister or chancellor".
These two forms of government: Democracy and Republic, are not only dissimilar but antithetical, reflecting the sharp contrast between (a) The Majority Unlimited, in a Democracy, lacking any legal safeguard of the rights of The Individual and The Minority, and (b) The Majority Limited, in a Republic under a written Constitution safeguarding the rights of The Individual and The Minority.
According to James Madison, the difference between a democracy and a republic is that a democracy is a government ruled by the people and a republic is a country that is owned by the people. James Madison was one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence.
