In May of 1775, the Second Continental Congress began to set up defensive forces in the colonies as preparation for a British attack. The Continental Army was formed from militiamen from New England and expert riflemen from southern colonies. George Washington was elected commander-in-chief, and the Second Continental Congress appointed a support staff of major generals.
