The British troops moved on Lexington and Concord in an attempt to seize a reported arms cache, and to attempt the capture of John Hancock and Samuel Adams. The information obtained by the British concerning the existence of the arms and the whereabouts of Hancock and Adams was good, but the two patriots were warned of the British movement by Paul Revere, and the colonials chose to stand and fight rather than retire, thus starting the war for American Independence.

∙ 14y agoThe British attempted to sieze the war munitions stored by the Americans in the town of Concord, Massachusetts, as well as arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock. The fighting began when Colonial Minutemen engaged the British in Lexington, Mass. The engagement led to the retreat of the British back to Boston, all the while sustaining heavy casualties (73 dead, 174 wounded). The Minutemen harrassed their foe all the way back to the city, suffering only 49 dead, and 39 wounded.
The final causualties were 293 Britain, 95 Americans. Guess the British should stick to war on their own territory.

∙ 8y agoGeneral Gage heard that Samuel Adams and John Hancock were meeting in Lexington. He also heard that minutemen were storing weapons in Concord. He ordered more than 700 soldiers to go arrest Hancock and Adams and and find the weapons.

The British marched towards Lexington and Concord to get the ammunition stored there. Thomas Gage had learned that a stock pile of weapons and ammunition was stored in Concord and in April 1775 he decided to seize the supplies.
