In 1862, the Homestead Act offered free land to anybody who could meet a couple of requirement's You had to be able to pay ten dollars for all of the paperwork, be the head of a household, be at least 21 years old, and cultivate and improve the land. This Act encouraged many Americans and foreigners to move to the West.

Answer:

Some of the hardships faced by farmers who had moved to the west included suffering through a depression, living in fear that one day a natural disaster would wipe out their house, building a home (farmers usually ended up building Sod Houses because their was not a lot of lumber available), mosquito infestations and many other harsh conditions.
