A typical republic has an elected head of state, which is nowadays usually called a president. It also has elected regional representatives who speak on behalf of the people. There are also usually set terms for government official, such as the President of the United States of America's four year term.

The Roman Republic was established with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy. Originally it replaced the king with two annually elected consuls and retained the other institutions of the monarchy. The (unelected) senate, which had been the advisory body for the king, became the advisory body for the consuls. The Assembly of the Soldiers (which voted on war on peace) became the body which elected the consuls. The Assembly of the Tribes, which gathered all Roman citizens, was also retained. It is not clear what role it played at the beginning.

Over time more executive officers of state (magistrates) were created. There was a distinction between higher and lower magistrates. The higher ones were the consuls, the praetors (chief justices) and censors (who oversaw public morality, carried out the census, which was a registration of the citizens and their property, enrolled the senators, and commissioned and financed public works). They were elected by the Assembly of the Soldiers. The lower ones were the aediles (who carried out many administrative functions) and the quaestors (the treasurers). They were elected by the Assembly of the Tribes.

During a rebellion, the plebeians (the commoners) created their own assembly, the Plebeian Council, and their own representatives, the Plebeian Tribunes.

Originally the consuls presented bills for the Assembly of the Soldiers to vote on. Later the plebeian tribunes became the main proposers of bills. They submitted them to the vote of the Plebeian Council.
