John Hancock is credited as the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence, as he was President of the Congress when it was drawn up.

His bold signature has become a household phrase. Someone who signs a document is said to "put his John Hancock on it." Hancock reportedly said of his signature, "King George can read it without his glasses. "

John Hancock. He wrote it very large so the king wouldn't "have to put on his spectacles to see". As president of the Congress, John Hancock was the first to sign this historic document.

The absolute first signers were John Hancock and Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Convention and they were the only two who signed that first document. A larger copy was made and the most of the convention delegates signed it on August 2, 1776. That is the document we consider the Declaration of Independence and which is on display in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
