Nobody knowsHistorians have searched through many testimonies: some legal testimonies, some not, but all biased. The only thing that can be conclusively said is that generally, the British soldiers say the disgruntled colonists made the first move, and the colonists say that the offensive redcoats fired first.

The primary source documents surrounding the incident vary wildly in times, location, orders that the soldiers were (not) given, the number of soldiers/minutemen, whether there was discussion beforehand, etc. But ultimately, one person or a group of people fired from one opposing side, and the rest is history.
