The issue of slavery was important to northerners because that meant they could catch runaway laves and they could get a reward for it. it was also important for the southerners because that meant that the money they spent on them was a partial waste.

They wanted all of the states to be equally powerful and slavery would make the southern states more powerful than the Northern states. Th Union were also abolitionists (people who opposed slavery) and wanted slavery to vanish. Because the South had a farming economy they didn't want slavery to go and have their trade and money to go down.

Why did many northerners want to keep slavery in the south?

Answer made assuming the above question means: Why did the Union not join the confederacy? The answer is somewhat simple: The union wished to abolish slavery. This caused multiple states start to take sides, and as you can see, the southern states joined the confederacy as they ran large plantations and needed the African slaves to run them. The northern states did not have many slaves due to a lack of need because their food supply/money was made mostly on family run farms.

Why did northerners call the war with Mexico Mr Polk's war?

They (wrongfully) believed that president James K. Polk's aggression was an attempt to extend slavery. They called it this to take away national support of the war. Actually, he wanted California at all costs. He got away with it, but ultimately, the new acquired territories vs. slavery question led to the American Civil War.

Why did northerners go south during reconstruction?

"Northerners went south for various reasons. A few did hope to profit the South was being rebuild. Many more, however, were union soldiers ho had grown to lose the South's rich land. Others, both black and white, were teachers, ministers, and reformers who sincerely wanted to help the freedmen."

How did settlement of the west increase tension between the North and South?

The opening of the western territories came at a time when the North and South were at odds over the question of slavery. Southerners wanted to add to their number, political and economic power by hopefully allowing slavery in the territories or at least letting the people there choose for themselves. Northerners did not want to add more slave states. They viewed slavery an abhorrent evil as well as a system that devalued the work of the free working man. They also did not want to increase the voting power of the South.

How many boys joined the Civil War?

There is no good answer to this question. There is no solid definition for "boy" for that time. Many thousands of northerners below age 16 joined. Tens of thousands of southerners below age 16 joined the fight. Soldiers as young as 12, 13 and 14 were not uncommon.

Why was the question of whether or not to allow slavery in the US territories such an important issue for Northerners and Southerners?

Well the north thought all men were created equal but, the south thought god put some on the Earth to rule others. The north disagreed with the south and the south disagreed with the north. But some people in the south agreed with the north they were called Quakers they were a religious group. They would help runaway slaves like the famous Harriet Tubman. The south got angry with the north because they helped runaway slaves. So the South's money was disappearing because they viewed slave as property they paid for instead of the people that they were.

Where did Violence over the question of slavery in the territories broke out between northerners and southerners in?

The earliest violence broke out in Kansas (known as "bleeding Kansas") between settlers there who supported abolition, and settlers from neighboring Missouri who ran raiding parties, as supporters of slavery. Kansas had been given the option to choose for itself whether it wanted to be a Free State or a Slave State. This violence broke out well before the Civil War, as early as the 1850s, and continued sporadically straight through the end of the War.
