The history of national parks dates back to 1800s; the "era" of nationalism.

George Catlin, as one of first Americans to support the preservation of nature as a national policy, proposed the creation of a national park after witnessing a slaughter of buffaloes in South Dakota in 1832. Sioux Indians then killed numerous buffaloes to trade its tongues for whiskey.

Even though his proposal was largely ignored at the time, the idea lived on, and with Yellowstone Park in 1872, the national park system was established.
