Ancient Rome was a civilization that grew out of a small agricultural community founded on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 10th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, it became one of the largest empires in history.[1] In its centuries of existence, Roman civilization shifted from a monarchy to an oligarchic republic to an increasingly autocratic empire. It came to dominate Western Europe and the Mediterranean region through conquest and assimilation. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Rome

The Pantheon in Rome was built by Agrippa, who was put in charge of public works in Rome by the emperor Augustus, in 27 BC. The temple was destroyed in a fire in 80 AD and the emperor Domitian had it rebuilt. It burnt again in 110 AD. The date of its final rebuilding is uncertain. It is commonly thought that it was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian (reigned 117-138) but it has also been argued that his predecessor, Trajan (98-117) , was the one who had it rebuilt . The temple was altered and enlarged. A rotunda (round building) with a dome was added to the original square temple. Its dome is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.

The Pantheon was built by Agrippa, which he started in 27 BC, during his third consulship. It burnt in 80 AD and the emperor Domitian had it rebuilt. It is usually said that the emperor Hadrian rebuilt the Pantheon in 126 after another fire in 110 and that he produced the current shape and features of this temple. However, a recent survey of bricks with the manufacturer's stamp on them has shown that this construction started before Hadrian. Therefore, the current building might have been designed by Apollodorus of Damascus who was the architect of the emperor Trajan. Hadrian completed the project. Some of the decorative schemes must have been placed under Hadrian. Hadrian did not claim that he rebuilt the Pantheon.

How did the pantheon influence life for the western civilization?

The Pantheon still has the largest reinforced concrete dome in the world. Some of the Roman temples were circular and had a dome, like the Pantheon. Knowledge of how to make Roman concrete was lost during he Middle Ages and domes were no longer built in western Europe for centuries. Then between 1446 and 1461 Brunelleschi built a dome for Florence Cathedral which was even bigger than that of the Pantheon. This was a big achievement because his dome is made with bricks. Brunelleschi had studied the dome of the Pantheon and other Roman architecture prior to his undertaking. Since then several churches and secular buildings (including the Capitol on Washington) have been built with domes. This was inspired by Roman architecture.

What was the pantheon first used for?

A pantheon was a temple dedicated to all deities. Normally, temples were dedicated to one or two gods or, rarely, three gods. A pantheon, instead, was dedicated to the all deities. The word is Greek and combines pan (all) and theon (of or for all the gods) which meant a temple of/for all the gods. The Greeks built pantheons and the Romans built pantheons throughout the Roman Empire.
