The Greeks invented their mythology to explain the ways of their gods. They also used it for having a subject of discussion and entertainment, in much the same ways celebrities are used today. For instance, the king of gods and men, Zeus, got into many affairs with other women, infuriating his wife and sister, Hera. This dynamic fuelled stories and discussions of Zeus and Hera for years.

When the Romans and the Greeks begun to mix. It became aparent that the Romans had no mythology. So they adopted Greek mythology. The Roman Juno is the Greek Hera, for instance.
