The Egyptians mummified the dead because they believed the persons soul would leave the body at death and return. The soul needed to be able to recognize the body to live forever and therefore they used the mummification process.

They made mummies and placed things in the tomb with them to prepare them for the 'after life' so that they were ready for what they believed would happen to the dead - the afterlife. hope this helps.

The 'mummifying' process was done to preserve the remains of their dead. They believed that when a human died they went directly into the afterlife as they were. And in order for them to 'arrive' in the best possible condition they were wrapped in cloths soaked with their preserving substance.
