Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian are Romance languages. This term means that they have their roots in Vulgar (common) Latin. This was an informal, colloquial form of Latin which developed various dialects around the Roman Empire. The Romance languages evolved gradually from these dialects of Vulgar Latin over the course of many centuries.
Latin and Romance influence on the English language have come through two sources. One was the use of Latin as a language of the educated and of the church in the Middle Ages. The other was the Norman invasion. The Normans were French and French became the language of the aristocracy. Thus, numerous French words (many of which are of Latin origin), have entered the English language.
The only letters of the English alphabet which do not come from the Latin alphabet are: J, U and W.

∙ 13y agoLatin was the language of the ancient Romans and our present day Romance languages are direct descendants of Latin. These languages are Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Romanian. The English language is slightly influenced by Latin due to the Norman Invasion of England when Norman French was spoken and influenced the native Saxon language.
