There were a fair number of queens and empresses who ruled in the Middle Ages. Empress Irene was ruling the Byzantine Empire when Charlemagne was crowned in Rome. There were a number of female Spanish monarchs. A woman named Hedwig was crowned King of Poland (yes, king). One of the most successful monarchs of her time was Queen Margaret I of Denmark.

Some were supremely important, and some were marginalized. There were medieval queens who did not get along with their husbands and disappeared. No doubt there were kings who did away with their wives so they could remarry. There were some queens who fled into convents to get away from their husbands, leaving the kings wondering what to do because they could not take their wives out of the sanctuary of the convent.

But then there were others. When Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the West, Empress Irene was already ruling the Byzantine empire. She was neither the first nor the last Byzantine Empress regnant.

Queen Ethelfleda of Mercia ruled for her husband because he was weak in some unrecorded way. When he died, she continued to rule and spent several years kicking around the Vikings who had trying to invade her kingdom, taking away some of the land they had conquered from other English kingdoms as she did.

Hedwig of Poland was crowned as a king just to underscore the fact that she was the boss. Harry Potter enthusiasts will recognize the name. (see link)

Queen Margaret I of Denmark was not supposed to rule that country because it had a law saying only men could rule. The members of the nobility respected her enough to ask her to rule anyway. When a man claiming to be the rightful king brought an army to remove her, she destroyed it. She united Denmark with Sweden and Norway and Iceland, and had quite a nice little empire for over twenty years. (see link)

There were always queens who were married to kings, for the whole duration of the Middle Ages. There were also a large number of queens regnant, queens who ruled on their own account, and there were also empresses regnant of the Byzantine Empire. Empress Irene was ruling the Byzantine Empire in 800, when Charlemagne was crowned emperor of his empire in 800 AD.
