Political factors: offices became viewed as burdens, military interfered with politics, civil war and unrest after the good emperors were gone, division of the empire, and moving the capitol to Byzantium (AKA Constantinople).

Social factors: lack of interest in public affairs, low confidence, disloyalty, corruption, HUGE contrast between rich and poor, disease and food shortage.

Economic factors: poor harvests, trade disruption, no war plunder, inflation, high taxes, and again HUGE gap between rich and poor.

Military factors: invasion from tribes, low funds for defense, less and less soldiers, and low patriotism and loyalty to Rome.

MOST important cause: Invasion by Germanic tribes and Huns.

ancient Rome's fall occurred over many centuries and was the result of many factors. One primary factor was the increasing instability of the emperors, with incompetence, cruelty, and violent usurpation becoming characteristic. Another was the loss of vital spirit among the society as a whole, with complacency, cynicism, and detachment from civil affairs as general features of later Roman citizenry. Yet another was the surging strength and ambition of tribal groups at the northern and eastern borders of the Empire: these groups increasingly felt bold enough to raid, to invade, and even to annex portions of the Empire for the sake of their own progress or profit.

I think the Roman Empire began its fall due to Caesar Tiberius' interaction with his "little fishes' down there in Tunisia. They were his little boyfriends with whom he swam and frolicked. I suspect they grew up and spread paedophilia throughout the Empire, which naturally led the leadership away from keeping things together in favour of....well, frolicking with young boys. The same thing happened with the British Empire by the end of the 19th century. And we won't even sicken you with tales of the Ottoman Empire's final epoch (all right, you're interested - well, let's just say that historians have pointed out the Balkan villages' practise of removing their young boys in advance of the Turkish Army's arrival as they marched northwards to meet the Russians during the Crimean War). That's why the FBI and the est of America's fascist police state are so dead set against paedophilia in every form, despite the fact that so many highly-placed officials in Government have recently been caught in the practise.

The downfall of Ancient Rome (particularly, its western half in the 5th century CE) was caused by numerous factors; however, two were most important. First, the top level of leadership was highly unstable, with frequent and often violent changes occurring. Second, aggressive and strong tribes from the north and east invaded in search of new wealth and new homelands, and finally the Romans could hold them back no longer. (The eastern half of Rome survived until 1453, when it was overwhelmed by the Ottoman Empire. )

Ancient Rome? Although there are several reasons why ancient Rome fell, and several more theories, one reason is because of a weakened army, unable to defend the borders.
