They also had to go on long marches regularly to maintain their fitness. The contributed to the upkeep of their forts. They built their forts and built the roads. They also went hunting to provide some of the meat they ate. In their spare time, which was very limited, they played dice.

∙ 10y agoDuring the period of conquest, the soldiers in the Roman army conquered new territories. After this, the legions were stationed at garrisons in the provinces (conquered territories) especially in the frontier ones. The task of the soldiers was defence and maintaining order when needed. Later the empire came increasingly under attack form outside and the soldiers' main military tasks was defence against invasions.
When not fighting the solders spent a lot of time training and drilling. They were also engaged in construction. They built the stone-paved roads (which had the military purpose of facilitating the movement of troops and the transport of supplies to the solders), bridges, the limes (lines of fortification with watchtowers along the borders of the empire which could be hundreds of miles long) and forts.
