The Roman army had many responsibilities but a soldier's first duty was to obey orders. Among the responsibilities of the army were the building of aqueducts. bridges and roads. Some units were used as a police force in certain troublesome territories. A soldier was also responsible for the care and maintenance of his equipment and to keep himself combat ready.
In the ancient world, every country had to have an army or an ally who would come to its aid. If they did not, the country would be swallowed up by a more powerful one.. The Roman soldier's primary purpose was to defend Rome. From there his job grew into conquering other countries in order to make and keep Rome's borders secure. Once this was done, the soldiers were put to work as the builders of the artifacts that we see today, such as roads, aqueducts and bridges. In some cases the army also acted a a police force in newly conquered territories.
An ancient Roman soldier would first of all learn how to march. Then he would learn weaponry and practice at least two hours in the mornings and possibly another two hours in the afternoon, depending upon the events that may be unfolding in/around the camp. He had to care for his clothing and clean his armor and weapons, making certain there was not any speck of rust on them. If he were stationed in a fort, there were mess halls, but if he were in a marching camp he would have to cook his own food and set up his own tent (along with his tent mates). Every soldier had to do guard duty of some type at some time. He not only had to learn hand to hand combat, but he also was taught the use of the heavy weapons such as the various types of balistae. Once his "boot camp" phase was over, he would be sent out on the various types of military patrols, such as helping to enforce the tax collections or rounding up troublemakers. He also learned how to dig -- and not just his share of the marching camp. The Roman soldier, besides being a fighter, was also a builder. All of the major remains we see today were constructed by the army. An implement called a "dolabra" was a digging tool and was just as much a part of a soldier's kit as his sword.
