This is one Roman achievement: The Romans, at the height of their power, had an extensive highway system that connected the desert of Egypt and Palestine to the cold, snow-covered forests of Germania and Northern Europe. Because of the size and length of these roads, the Roman legions could be easily travel from one width of the Empire to the other.

Some of the major Roman achievements were the aqueducts, the use of concrete in various weights, the use of arches, an efficient system of roads, the basis for our western laws and legal system, the calendar, military tactics that have been studied by graduates of West Point until very recently, personal cleanliness and public toilets. There is a long list of achievements attributed to the ancient Romans. The list has to be headed by the sheer size of their empire, from the Euphrates to the Atlantic Ocean and from Scotland to Sudan certainly took a lot of achieving. Their army was the greatest fighting machine the ancient world had ever seen and their buildings, such as to Pantheon and the Colosseum and Hadrian's tomb are still standing after 2,000 years. Their road system is followed by many highways in the present time and their water and sewer systems are still being used in places. Many of out western governments base their legal system upon that of the Romans.

What are the three ways that Charlemagne helped Europe?

Your textbook may have other thoughts on the matter, but generally speaking Charlemagne is credited with three major achievements: 1. He reunited most of continental Western Europe under his rule and was created the first "Emperor of the Romans" since the fall of the Roman Empire in the 6th century 2. He initiated the "Carolingian Renaissance", ordering the monks in his Empire to systematically collect and copy the works of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Practically all the ancient Greek and Roman scriptures that have survived did so because of this order and because of the copies that were then made 3. He (forcibly) converted the Saxons and many other peoples east of the river Rhine to Christianity.
