When the emperor died he had two sons.

Because when a man died, his belongings would go to his sons, the empire was divided in two halves. Each son of the roman emperor got a halve of the empire.

If he would have had 3 sons, it would have been divided in 3 parts.

Emperor Diocletian was looking for a way to fix this and other problems.

He decided that the only thing to do was to actually break the empire into two pieces.

One piece would be the western empire, based in Rome. The other would be the eastern empire, based in Byzantium. There would be two emperors, one in charge of each piece, working together against outside enemies, but each ruling their half separately.

This turned out to be a very good plan at least for the Eastern half of the empire.

When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, the Eastern Empire continued for another thousand years.

The Roman Empire is divided into two eras because of the different natures of the government.

In the first part of the Roman Empire, the rulers were secular, meaning that the government was political. It was characterized by rulers known as Caesars. It was also a "country" of sorts in that it had specific land areas and citizens. Rome, although made up of conquered countries, was a country.

The second half of the Roman Empire was characterized by a supreme religious government. There were many kings of many countries who were controlled by the religious authority. The religious authority would select one king to rule over them all under the title of "Holy Roman Emperor". The Emperor was answerable and accountable only to the religious authority. During this phase, the Empire's countries continually fought wars among themselves and with each other. Citizens belonged to their country, but they were answerable to the higher religious authority. This was the period known as the "Dark Ages".

The Roman empire was never divided into two haves. The emperor Diocletian divided the empire into FOUR parts. This was called the tetrarchy. It was done to make the empire easier to govern, as it had grown so large that communications, troop and tax movement took too long to get results.

The Roman empire was split, by Diocletian, because it was simply too big for one person to rule. Important communications took too long to reach the borders, troop movements were facilitated in smaller areas, and laws or regulations could be put into effect much sooner. It was later split into the eastern and western empires but this split is mainly a textbook one, as the citizens of Constantinople considered themselves Roman just as the citizens of Rome did. When the western part of the empire fell to the "barbarians", the Roman empire still continued in the eastern part.

Diocletian divided the Roman empire thinking it would be easier to rule and control if certain authorities (the Caesars and the Augustii) had direct control over specific areas.

Why was roman empire divided into two sections?

I'm certainly not portraying myself as an expert of Roman history, but what I remember from my history classes and the multitude of History Channel episodes on Rome, I believe the main reason was that it was the only way to manage what had become a huge empire. It was simply too large and too involved for one person to effectively control.Diocletian decided that the empire was too big for one person to govern so he split the empire in two and instated a co-emperor.
