NVA tanks captured the South on 30 April 1975. However, under the Ford administration, US Military forces had to recapture the vessel Mayaquez, which was done at a high cost of US personnel & equipment. Consequently, many people, including the US Veterans Administration may count May 1975 as the official end of the Vietnam War.

The US armed forces ceased offensive actions in South Vietnam on August 15, 1973, based on the Paris Accords signed on January 27, 1973. Congress later voted to cut off aid to the South.

On April 23, 1975, during a major offensive by North Vietnam, President Gerald Ford declared the official end of US involvement in the war. Six days later, US diplomatic officials fled Vietnam during the fall of Saigon. On the following day, April 30, 1975, the acting head of the South Vietnamese government surrendered.
