How did the European feel after World War 1?

Europe recovered slowly from World War 1. The involved countries were economically crippled, and therefore international trade was sluggish. This made it even harder for the countries to recover.

After the Treaty of Versailles the map of Europe changed greatly. Some countries like Austria-Hungary disappeared - it split into parts and new countries were born.

Hungary became a separate country with one-third of its original historical territory; Austria became a bit smaller, Czechoslovakia was formed from Czech territories, Sudetenland, and Slovakia; Poland became united and independent again; Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro were united with Serbia to form Yugoslavia in 1927, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania became independent from former Russia (Soviet Union was its new name); the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire fell -> Turkey (much smaller).

Europe was in ruins, and there was unemployment, high food prices. The most important task was to rebuild the buildings, railroads, bridges and everything that had been destroyed in the war. In Italy in fear of Communism a fascist was helped to power by the extreme nationalist groups. Although he started a lot of public projects which helped the industrialisation, he became a fascist dictator.

In Germany the Weimar Republic lasted until hitler came to power in 1933. Germany became a nazi Dictatorship. Russia became the soviet Union after a severe civil war. The Bolshevik dictatorship was led by Lenin, later by Stalin. They started to build communism and all the European countries were afraid that the idea of Communism would spread westward.
