One way geography helped the North win the Civil War was because they recruited slaves who knew the south geography and could help plan attacks. Also the North was able to stop supplies from reaching the people in the south.

Geography played an extremely important role in European history. England is an island. When it was not united, the Romans captured it. They left. The Angels and Saxons did, and then the Danes did. The Normans captured England because Harold refused to let his army rest. Since then no one has captured England because it has been united. Venice, an island had an empire consisting of a number of islands. It too has been difficult to capture. Sweden is on a long peninsula. At one time it had a number of colonies. Its colonies have been captured. Nothing stood between them and the enemy. No one crossed the water and conquered Sweden. Denmark has been captured by land from the south but not from sea. Italy is on a peninsula. Still, since it has not been united, it has been easy for armies to move throughout the area. The southern part on has had military influence and has been difficult to capture. With its strong navy, it has had a great influence. Spain is on a Peninsula. It has a mountain range between it and France. The Arabs conquered Spain and drove out the ruling remnants of the Roman Empire housed in Constantinople. After 700 years Spain drove out the Arabs. Napoleon conquered Spain, but could not hold it. When the people rebelled, he could not resupply his troops. Geography got in the way. Russia has the benefit of great distances. Both Napoleon and Hitler drove their armies great distances to get to Moscow. They had difficulty supplying their armies. They got bogged down. In general: if there was a strong government, it has been difficult to attack an area over water, it is difficult to cross mountains, and it is harder to supply an army at a great distance.
