Probably about 900,000, though no one will ever be able to say for sure. Estimates range from 600,000 to 1.1 million, but most agree that around 900,000 is probably the best estimate. Just about every adult white male in the south was in the Confederate service, though quite a few quit the colors and deserted before the end.

The death and casualty statistics from the US Civil War have had many estimates. Some historians now claim the total deaths in the US Civil War reached 750,000. The usual number is around 620,000. With that said, most estimates on the deaths of Confederate soldiers range in the area of 250,000 or more. One obstacle in this measurement was that so many Confederate war records had been destroyed. It is worthwhile to note that diseases caused the majority of deaths.

Must have been minimal.

The Confederates did not agree to recruit slaves into the armies until the very last weeks of the war.
