They called themselves the Confederate States of America.

Other countries did not recognise their sovereignty, and Congress just referred to them as 'the States in Rebellion'.

As a group, they were called the Confederate States of America. If they would have finalized their secession from the Union, this would probably have been what their country would be called. The soldiers that fought for the Union were usually called Confederates or Johnny Rebs.

What did Abraham Lincoln do for us?

He was the 16th president of the United States. He led the country through one of the worst periods in US history; the Civil War. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to help the Union win the Civil War and thus preserve the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the states which had rebelled against the Union, thus, at the time it was written, the Union did not have control over the states, which had seceded or rebelled against the Union. The Union states were "free states" as the Northern states (divided between Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the Western Territory had outlawed slavery. The rebel states or Confederate states did surrender to the Union, and became "free states" by virtue of the Emancipation Proclamation. Thus, Lincoln was successful in bringing the United States together, again, as one nation.
