A new strategy of attacking the civilian infrastructure that supported the Confederate armies in the field. By destroying farms and railroads, Sherman could deprive the troops of food and supplies, while also punishing the Georgians for seceding from the Union.

It shortened the war by months, at almost nil casualties.
