Officers are addressed either by rank (Captain, Commander, etc.), or by Sir or Ma'am as the case may be. If you know the officer, it's customary to address them by rank and name (e.g., Commander Lawless). It depends on the circumstances as well, if it's in passing, in private, or a formal meeting, unit gathering, off duty, etc.

The Athenian navy was part of the southern Greek fleet which fought the sea battle at Artemesion in the strait next to the pass of Thermopylae. The Athenian component was commanded by Themistocles.
Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who served as Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet (CINCPAC) during WWII, and Chief of Naval Operations after the Japanese surrender, was the last surviving Navy 5 star (Fleet) Admiral. The rank is a lifetime appointment, with full pay and benefits of an active duty officer, only being retired. He died in 1966.
