The United States experienced two eras of massive "anti-war" protesters: The US Civil War and Vietnam War; both of which were actually "anti-draft" protesting, under the disguise of anti "war." The vast majority of protesters were "draft aged males" and associated persons (personal friends, wives, girlfriends, mothers, etc.). All US wars have had some anti-war protesting, from the Mexican War of 1846 thru the American Indian wars, even WWI & and very quietly the Second World War, but only the American Civil War in the 1800s (19th century) had military conscription, consequently the "draft riots" (anti-war protesters).
College students in general were the primary anti-draft (anti-war) protesters; Berkley University in the San Francisco Bay Area was prime headquarters for the anti-draft movement. A movement which supported the enemy of the US grunt.

Returning GI's had left one war, and returned home to another one. The military draft (40,000 men a month) had fed the flames of protests and riots, and reached it's apex with the killing of four college students at Kent State University in Ohio on 04 May 1970 (memorialized by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, (and Young) with..."OHIO"). One of the best ways to lose a war, is by fighting one on TWO FRONTS; Fighting one war in Vietnam, and fighting another one on the home front; we had a divided nation. The Communists had used one of the classic rules of war: Divide and Conquer.

Anti-War protesters=Anti-Draft protesters Anti-War riots=Anti-Draft riots People don't really care about a war when it's just on the news. As long they're not involved, it's just that...the news. They can turn it off, or leave it on, or watch it. Once they get that draft notice in the mail...they can't just turn a knob and it's off. Now THEY'RE INVOLVED! Now they protest. Now they riot. Now they want the war ended!
During the 1968 Democratic National Convention, held August 26 to August 29 in Chicago, anti-war protesters marched and demonstrated throughout the city.
