Nothing - the start of the war had nothing to do with the US.
The United States entered the war much later as a result of a number of events, including the Zimmerman Telegraph and unrestricted submarine warfare.
April 1917 President Wilson asked congress to approve a declaration of War. The United States decision to enter the war had a great deal to do with the sudden change in German Military strategy. In January of 1917 the German's resumed the practice of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare. In the first weeks of March Germany sunk 5 unarmed US merchant ships. Previously in 1916, after Germany sank the Sussex a US merchant ship, the US threatened to enter the war, and Germany backed down. They promised not to sink merchant or passenger ships without warning. They kept this promise until 1917. Other immediate causes for US entering the war are the 1) Zimmerman Telegram (intercepted by British intelligence a note between Germany and Mexico proposing that the two countries align) and 2) the Russian Revolution.
Because the Germans were the enemies during the war. Germany had angered the US by using submarines to sink American ships, and this was the primary reason for the US declaration of war in April 1917. Additionally, Germany thought the US was about to declare war on them, so Germany asked Mexico to start a war with the US to distract them; British spies intercepted the message and Americans were furious when they found out about the plan.
The sinking of the Lusitania infuriated the American public.
The sinking of the Lusitania and The Zimmerman Note
The Germans attacked and sunk a cruise ship with U-boats (submarines) American passengers on that ship

The Americans, British, and The Soviet Union.
The ship carried 120 Americans and its name was the Lusitania.
When the Germans sunk the ocean liner Lusitania with Americans on board, especially Mr. Vanderbilt, the Americans and President Wilson were incensed. This led the Congress and President Wilson to declare war on Germany. Many Americans regretted this decision after the war.
German Americans tried to prove their loyalty by changing their names.
The British, Americans and Germans used tents to shelter men while the Soviets used men to shelter tents.
The media printed news on the sinking of the "Lusitania" and made most Americans hate the Germans for doing that. It was mostly used for good in World War 1.

Of course there are always some people who hate the Germans for the war. Most Dutch people, though, like the rest of the world, don't hate the Germans or anything, because most Germans didn't agree with the Nazi's back then, anyway.
the Germans wanted the Mexicans to attack usa to avoid their intervention but the Americans found out about it
The Americans came in and killed the Germans, until they surrendered. :D
the Germans created the ray gun
There was a lot of war hysteria at the time ... Britain was, after all, at war with Germany (World War 1, 1914-1918).
