What were both similarities and differences of ww 1 and World War 2?

The main cause of World War I was the many alliances within Europe. Both Germany and France created competing alliance systems (Triple Alliance vs. Triple Entente), which ultimately led to the escalation of a war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia into a world war.

Serbia was a new country in the Balkans who wanted to achieve a large, united Slavic kingdom as they were going through high levels of nationalism (as were all European countries). Austria-Hungary constantly thwarted Serbia's ideas of a large kingdom because they feared it would ultimately cripple their empire as they had a large Slavic population. Austria's Archduke, Franz-Ferdinand, was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist group, the Black Hand. Austria-Hungary decided that they must destroy Serbia, and declared war on the nation but not before having the backup of their good ally, Germany. They did this because they knew Serbia's ally, Russia, would support Serbia. Germany then created the Schlieffen Plan, which called for a deployment through neutral Belgium and an attack on France, bringing both these countries in (which also brought in the UK as they defended Belgium's neutrality). These countries were then at a stalemate, so they looked for new countries to join for aid, which led to the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, Japan, and the US to join. The European countries also called on their colonial people for aid. This is how a simple war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia turned into a world war involving dozens of nations.

World War I ended with the Treaty of Versailles, which was completely unrealistic and unfair, not only to the Central Powers but other countries as well. So even though this peace treaty was signed, Europe was never truly in peace. Germany was forced to accept guilt for causing WWI and in return, had to pay for all the damage caused by the war. This was impossible as Germany was in extreme debt due to their involvement in WWI, and because this number was immensely huge. This led to unrest in Germany and a vengeful attitude. Italy was Another Country who was upset about the treaty, as they lost most of the land they were promised by the Allies. The only reason Italy joined WWI was to acquire these lands, and they were given not even half of what they were promised. The social unrest and vengeance in Italy and Germany led to the rise of fascist leaders, such as Hitler and Mussolini. These leaders gained popularity by promising revenge for World War I. To add to the problems, Hitler was responsible for multiple genocides, most notably against Jews.

So truly, World War II was just an even deadlier extension of World War I.

The same countries that fought in World War 1 also fought in World War 2 with a few exceptions. (Britain, Canada, USA, France, Germany, Russia and others) Both, wars had tanks and planes and new modern weapons. Both wars had some of the same battlefields in Europe, such as in France and Belgium. Germany was responsible for the gravity of both wars. A few of the countries had Germany as an enemy in both wars. Both, wars had millions of deaths. Both wars had a worldwide sickness that killed millions of people. Germany had concentration camps in both wars (but different types of people in them). Germany was under supplied and was not able to finish out the war with enough troops and military armament, weapons and ammunition. Germany felt they were right at the end of both wars.

Both had underlying causes of Militarism and Nationalism. However, other causes of World War 1 included Imperialism and economic rivalries. Whereas, with world war 2 other causes included the rise of Facism and Mussolini's desire to attain French territories.

In both World wars Germany had become the enemy of these three countries; United States, France and Great Briton. They took much land in both wars, but in the first it was for more territory, power, and resources. In the second world war Adolf Hitler was seeking, Lebenstraum, living space for his race. The Aryans, European people of pure blood tracing all the way back to Atlantis. (History shows this.) In world war one an emperor ruled Germany, but in world war 2 The Nationalsozialistische Deutsche tyhe nazis controlled it. Those are the main differences.
World War 1 was fought mostly in a trench warfare style. The reasons for the war were extremely complex and had to do with imperialism. In WW1 the fronts were totally immobile, you would practically have been sent to the front in 1914, and, if you were lucky enough not to die, you would sit in the same trench till 1917. (then the tanks came and ended the war quickly)

World war 1 was a war fought with new weapons (mainly the machine gun and poison gas) but with 17th to 18th century battle tacticts (just charge the enemy line in the hope to be vicorious). This is the reason why World war 1 demanded more soldier deaths than in World war 2.

The civilian life in World war 1 was totally different too; there were very few civilian deaths, and, unlike WW2, germany didnt commit genocide. There were no real occupations as in WW2.

In World War 1 the Germans got all the blame but actually didnt started the war, Frans Ferdinand (prince in Austria-Hungary) was shot down. AH demanded the suspects, but theu didnt get them, then they attacked Serbia, Germany joined AH cause of alliances, Russia joined Serbia to reduce German and AH power, France joined with Russia, and all the other Allies joined France.

World War 2 was fought with modern day methods and strategies using new warfare armament and technologies. It was fought in all types of terrain using many different methods. The front in the WW2 was extremely mobile and fast moving, thanks to the new mechanised tactics. Poland, for example, was conquered within a few weeks, but the land gained from conquering Poland was more land than ever was conquered in the WW1 over the entire 4 years of war.

The reasons for the war were more simplex. The Japanese wanted land and oil. They also wanted to rule the world. The German Nazis wanted to rid Europe of undesirable people groups and acquire land for the pure Aryan peoples. Hitler wanted to rule the world.

The WW2 had much more civilians casualties cause of terror bombing, and the germans commiting genocide, in the WW2 there also were real occupations that influenced civilian life on the long term.

The Germans and Japanese thought they had warfare supremacy, and they probably had in the beginning of the war, however, when America joined the war, the Axis were weakened, Germany by Russia and Britain, and Japan by Britain, China and Russia. If the Axis hadnt underestimated the power or Russia, they probably would have defeated the Allies at Normandy, may we be grateful they didnt =P.

One of the main differences between the two Great Wars is the type of warfare employed. WWI relied mainly on trench warfare which was devastating. WWI also saw the beginnings of air warfare, most notably in dogfights. WWII witnessed the development of bomber and long-range aircraft as well as the atomic bomb. Significantly more nations were involved in WWI than in WWII (which consisted mainly of the Allied vs Axis powers). While WWI was fought mainly in Europe, WWII also saw battle grounds in Africa and, most notably, the pacific.
