The "Allied Powers" fought against the "Axis Powers" in WW2. These terms are originally used by the leaders and historians of the nations in the Allied Powers. These terms are also now in common use to refer to the two alliances that were at war with each other 1939-1945. The Axis (Alliance) Powers lost the war.

Germany, under Adolf Hitler, created an alliance that would be called the "Axis". The following country was annexed or absorbed into Germany, however its population and leaders were primarily active supporters of Germany (part of the Axis) during the Second World War:

Austria

The following countries were active allies of Germany (part of the Axis) during the Second World War:

Italy, Japan, Finland, Romania, Bulgaria, & Hungary

Also the Soviet Union was an ally of Germany, August 1939-July 1941, until it was attacked by Germany. In July 1941 it would join the "Allied Powers". The Soviet Union joined Germany in the invasion of Poland in September 1939, and also murdered Polish civilian & military leaders in the eastern portion of Poland that it occupied & partioned.

The following countries became active allies of Germany (part of the Axis) during the Second World War, after their original parent nation was absorbed or defeated by Germany:

Slovakia, Croatia, & Vichy France

These three countries were not occupied by Germany and their civilian governments were not puppets of Germany. Slovakia participated in the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Slovakia & Croatia participated in the war against the Soviet Union after July 1941. Croatia also likely participated in the war against Yugoslavian partisans (Serbs) from 1941-1944. Vichy French military forces actively fought against British forces in the Middle East, and against British & American forces in North Africa. The Vichy French naval units in North & West Africa opposed the British Navy. The Vichy French allowed the Japanese to base Japanese forces in French Indo-China in 1941. The Vichy French government enthusiastically & actively supported the genocide being committed against the Jews. When Allied forces finally invaded southern France in 1944 (location of Vichy France), the leaders of Vichy France escaped to Germany. They would be tried as traitors & war criminals after the war by France.

Meanwhile in the post-war Balkans, the participation of Croatia with the Axis, would help sow the seeds of turmoil in the 1990's in the former-Yuogoslavia.

The following is a list of the major countries that were part of the Allied Powers at various times:

Poland, Great Britain, France (later the Free French), Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, South Africa, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Soviet Union, United States, China, Brazil, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Greece, Free Czech, and Italy (after Mussolini).
