The reason the United States entered into a war in Vietnam was to keep the Communists from North Vietnam and the Soviet Union from taking over South Vietnam. The war quickly spread to other countries in the area like Laos and Cambodia.

The United States purpose for being in the war was to stop the spread of communism, but throughout the war the US could not state a state a clear objective or purpose to be in the war. The Gulf of Tonkin incident resulted in the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, executed by President Lyndon Johnson. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was when apparently two United States destroyer ships were attacked by North Vietnamese ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. We know now that this was not the case, but President Johnson used this to initiate the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and increase US Military presence in Vietnam.

The US officially entered the war to attempt stopping the spread of communism, the Viet Cong if i'm not mistaken were from the communist area in the conflict, and attempted to take over the other area which was ruled by (in some definitions) democracy.
