What color uniforms did the north wear in civil war?

The South was grey, and the north was blue.

At the beginning of the War neither side had an official uniform, with Northerners wearing elegant uniforms and the Southerners wearing there regular day to day clothes. But even after the war really started uniforms weren't always universal, Union Zouave units wore different uniforms than regular Union Units and the Southerners, relied upon what they could find for their uniforms.

The most common uniform consisted of a Dark Blue frock coat and Sky Blue pants. There were other uniforms for special troops such as the colorful Zouaves, however most of them were still Dark Blue with extra trim. The riflemen wore dark green uniforms. Early in the war, many units were raised locally and from military schools and some still wore Grey uniforms that was common in the War of 1812. Yes, I did say gray. The colors were so bright it lit up the sky.

so really the north wore dark blue or gray.

EDIT: Actually the Confederate Soldiers (CSA/The South) wore grey uniforms. The Union Soldiers (USA/The North) wore blue. I have absolutely no idea, where you're getting purple from...

The Union troops after the first conflicts, settled on the dark blue, except for the Zouve units. Rebels wore the basic gray at first, but as the replacements came, many could not find gray, and was substituted for a beige yellow, or "Butternut" color. Eventually the southerners wore what they could find, a few wore jackets taken from Union troops.
