The British Empire,

The French Republic,

and The Russian Empire

France had concluded a formal military alliance with Russia in 1892, both countries were short on friends and worried about Germany.

Britain and France had signed a series of deals and agreements which were designed to ease tensions between them in 1904 this group of deals mostly about colonial development and spheres of influence became known by the French name "Entente Cordial" basically "The Polite Understanding"

In 1907 Britain made a similar set of deals with Russia regarding influence in mainland Asia, bringing to an end years of cat and mouse over the approaches to India (the Great Game).

This tied the three of them together in a "Triple Entente" somewhere short of an alliance but much closer than the squabbling of the previous decades and arranged against Germany, Austria-Hungry and Turkey (and technically Italy but she had made a secret deal with France)
