Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy in World War 2, in which the Allied invasion of France took place. General Dwight Eisenhower (United States) and British General Bernard Montgomery planned the invasion under this name, which later was known as D-Day.
There was much more preparation and planning and it was a much larger scale operation. The Dieppe Raid was not intended as an invasion but just to capture the port. The Allies learned a lot about their failures and the amphibious landings in North Africa and Sicily that prepared them for the Normandy landings.
Another name is the Invasion of Normandy. You could also call it a 'diversionary attack' as the Germans called it. They thought the real attack was going to be in Belgium because it was the closest to the German border.
Operation Overlord or the Normandy Invasion had to occur if the Allied Forces were going to defeat the Nazis. It was the only way to liberate the European nations and prevent the German from moving past the UK and on to the USA. It got to a late start because of whether but they did get there and the operation was a success.
